Apartment Above Needful Things; Tuesday Late Morning

Harley had spent most of the weekend on the mainland. Not just Baltimore, either - she'd taken the kid out on a little road trip. Yanno, for life lessons! Most of them criminal, of course, but that was sort of how their mentorship worked, so someone else could handle the boring stuff. Anyway, they'd had fun!

So much of it, in fact, that Harley had only landed back on the island late on Monday evening. Technically probably Tuesday? Which meant that after she'd passed out and slept her fill, the day was already well on its way. She rolled groggily out of bed, shambled her way into the living room --

And groaned when she saw the glitter bomb still waiting on the coffee table, and not downstairs attached to the front door ready to explode on Frenchie if he showed up again this week. Whether he'd already shown up or not, Harley was not in a state to go set it up now.

She shuffled around some more, in search of her phone, which she found discarded on the kitchen counter. No calls, no messages apart from Cass informing her she'd ordered breakfast delivery on Harley's account. Harley looked at the phone for a long moment more anyway, tapping her thumb against the side of it in thought. Groggy, still sleepy, not yet caffeinated thought.

And pulled up a number she'd had for a while but never actually texted before.

(Successfully, anyway. There was that time on her birthday.)

You awake yet?

"And now you're not gonna," Marc said. "I'm cool with it."

"Well, prob'ly for the best for you if I don't pass out in your lap," Harley surmised, amused. "Sounds messy, and not in any of the fun ways."

"It'd be quiet," Marc said before taking another bite of his burrito.

Funnily enough he said that as though the quiet was a downside.

"And you only like it when you're quiet, not me."

What? She'd picked up on that even before just then!

"You're better at talking than I am," Marc said.

Then made a wry face because he realized that could come off as damning with faint praise.

"Way better," Harley filled in for him, around a mouthful of burrito because no manners, and also irony. "And a lotta other noises too! You're all kinds of subtle on that front."

"You do enough for the both of us," Marc said. As though that was the issue and not his many psychological defense mechanisms.

"Damn right I do," Harley preened, like that was yet another badge of honor. She licked salsa off her top lip and smirked at him. "It's okay, sweetie, I like your little grunts, too."

"Good thing," Marc said. He leaned up to lick at her upper lip too. To be helpful.

And of course Harley made a little noise at that.

Something elated, in her throat, like a stray bit of pleasure squeezing its way out.

"You had a thing," he told her. As though she hadn't known.

"Uh huh," Harley agreed.

And kissed him. Just a little bit! Maybe he had a thing on his lips!

Given how Marc kissed her back it was clear he didn't mind if she was being too careful there.

And Harley took advantage of that. You know, to make sure his lips were very clean and ready for the next bite.

No, not this one that she bestowed upon his lip like a parting gift before breaking away again. Though probably worked for that, too.

"Oh," she breathed, "this is the best morning I've had in a while."

"How come?" Marc asked. Because he was slow sometimes.

Luckily Harley had no problem with explaining herself! "I got a hunk for a seat, a burrito, and I get kisses in the middle of breakfast? I'm livin' the dream!"

She punctuated that with another bite from her rapidly-diminishing burrito.

Which unfortunately did not keep her from adding on, as an afterthought, "'Kay I guess the dream would have fewer clothes and more full-on penetration but still, pretty close!"

"Sorry to disappoint," Marc said. He brushed his thumb across the side of her mouth. Either because she had something there or for some other reason. "Don't know if your chair could've handled it."

"Never know without trying," Harley pointed out, with a little smirk under his thumb. "Oh well. You'll just have to make it up to me later."

"It's your furniture," Marc pointed out. He took a thoughtful bite of his food. After chewing and swallowing, he asked, "Why Hollywood?"

This was in no way a sequitur, even though Marc made it sound like he was picking up an earlier conversation.

And he got the reaction he deserved, namely Harley blinking at him several times as she tried to put that together with, at first, literally anything that had just been said, and then with anything else, and came up with absolutely nothing.

"What?"

"For next time," Marc said, as though that explained it.

It might have, even, but Harley was already too deep in 'movies?? what' to reel herself back to when she might've talked about 'next time'.

So: "What? What next time?"

"What you told Steven to tell me," Marc said. "You wanted stars."

"Oh," Harley said with a great big sense of recognition. "Oh, no, I didn't mean people stars! Not that kind!"

"Then what?" Marc asked.

If Steven had been there he would have said he'd passed on the message accurately and this wasn't his fault.
