Apartment Above Needful Things; Tuesday Late Morning

Harley had spent most of the weekend on the mainland. Not just Baltimore, either - she'd taken the kid out on a little road trip. Yanno, for life lessons! Most of them criminal, of course, but that was sort of how their mentorship worked, so someone else could handle the boring stuff. Anyway, they'd had fun!

So much of it, in fact, that Harley had only landed back on the island late on Monday evening. Technically probably Tuesday? Which meant that after she'd passed out and slept her fill, the day was already well on its way. She rolled groggily out of bed, shambled her way into the living room --

And groaned when she saw the glitter bomb still waiting on the coffee table, and not downstairs attached to the front door ready to explode on Frenchie if he showed up again this week. Whether he'd already shown up or not, Harley was not in a state to go set it up now.

She shuffled around some more, in search of her phone, which she found discarded on the kitchen counter. No calls, no messages apart from Cass informing her she'd ordered breakfast delivery on Harley's account. Harley looked at the phone for a long moment more anyway, tapping her thumb against the side of it in thought. Groggy, still sleepy, not yet caffeinated thought.

And pulled up a number she'd had for a while but never actually texted before.

(Successfully, anyway. There was that time on her birthday.)

You awake yet?

"Not unless you make me."

Well, there was an attempt at that in it, anyway.

"If I am, you are," Marc replied.

Maturely.

A beat passed by.

"Am not."

What?

"Are too."

Also what?

"Am not," Harley repeated, this time with a little huff, "times a thousand."

"Are too," Marc said. "Times a thousand plus one."

Harley finally pulled her head up all the way, because he needed to see these eyebrows and just how high up they were.

"Not, times infinity."

That worked out, because she could see him smirking in return.

"Are. Times infinity, plus one."

"Infinity plus two!" Harley shot back.

And laughed.

"Plus three," Marc replied. He wasn't laughing but he was visibly smiling which for him was a lot.

Did he know he got all nice and crinkly around the eyes when he did that? Because Harley sure did.

Her hands cupped both of his cheeks. "Plus another infinity," she declared, "times another infinity, and an apple pie."

Fuck math.

She was grinning at him, now.

Marc's eyes were doing a lot of the crinkly thing right now.

"Hang on," he said, as though this was very serious. "What kind of apple pie?"

"Classic, moist, beautiful apple pie," Harley replied readily, "of course."

"Okay," Marc said, after giving a very very thoughtful nod. "Everything you said plus two of those. And a cherry."

"Fresh or maraschino?"

Important distinction!

Marc looked deeply offended she had to ask. You could tell by the eye crinkles.

"Fresh."

"What?" Harley objected to that particular bit of crinkling with a squeak. "The other ones are like getting a piece of candy in your drink!"

Actually...

"Oh, yanno what? All of that, and a big bag of candy!" A beat and a gasp: "No, two bags! No, three!"

Marc quirked his eyebrows up. "I look like a guy who has drinks with fruit in them?"

"No, but you look like a guy who should have drinks with fruit in them," Harley replied immediately. "They're good for ya!"

"Fresh cherries have the stems," Marc pointed out. "Figured you'd like that."

"Oh, you of all people know I got better ways of showin' off with my mouth."

"True," Marc had to acknowledge. "Plus you don't strike me as somebody who gets bored in bars."

"If I get bored in a bar I just leave," Harley agreed. "Or I make something interesting happen!"

This was also known as causing a scene.

"Could tell you what you are, though," Marc said.

Harley frowned lightly.

"What, the cherries? They're not magic tea leaves, you know."
