Apartment Above Needful Things; Tuesday Late Morning

Harley had spent most of the weekend on the mainland. Not just Baltimore, either - she'd taken the kid out on a little road trip. Yanno, for life lessons! Most of them criminal, of course, but that was sort of how their mentorship worked, so someone else could handle the boring stuff. Anyway, they'd had fun!

So much of it, in fact, that Harley had only landed back on the island late on Monday evening. Technically probably Tuesday? Which meant that after she'd passed out and slept her fill, the day was already well on its way. She rolled groggily out of bed, shambled her way into the living room --

And groaned when she saw the glitter bomb still waiting on the coffee table, and not downstairs attached to the front door ready to explode on Frenchie if he showed up again this week. Whether he'd already shown up or not, Harley was not in a state to go set it up now.

She shuffled around some more, in search of her phone, which she found discarded on the kitchen counter. No calls, no messages apart from Cass informing her she'd ordered breakfast delivery on Harley's account. Harley looked at the phone for a long moment more anyway, tapping her thumb against the side of it in thought. Groggy, still sleepy, not yet caffeinated thought.

And pulled up a number she'd had for a while but never actually texted before.

(Successfully, anyway. There was that time on her birthday.)

You awake yet?

"I thought that was just the moon," Harley admitted, around another bite.

Not much about Khonshu beyond 'asshole god' had stuck with her. And the moons happened to be plastered all over Marc's house as a convenient reminder.

"But you - " Marc started to say, then shook his head. "Never mind."

That was some real wishful thinking on his part, right there, that Harley would just let it go.

"What?" she asked, eyebrows raised all quizzical and curious and confused. "'But I' what?"

"Why'd you check if I was okay with it if you didn't get the night sky thing?" Marc asked. Because now he was thinking he'd misunderstood what he'd thought was her earlier concern.

"Moon's part of the night sky," Harley pointed out helpfully, although her expression remained on the quizzical side. "I was gonna offer the moon didn't have to be a part of it, if it skeeved ya out. I mean, I know that's makin' some assumptions about how much customization the house can offer, but that was just option one. Option two was scrapping the whole thing entirely."

"Okay," Marc said. He looked like he still wasn't sure he got it. Internally he was going to chalk it up to a misunderstanding on his part, since that had good odds of being the case. "It can do whatever. With the visuals."

"Good to know," Harley replied, although she was eyeing his face with some concern. "Look, all ya gotta know is I wasn't gonna ask for anything that made ya uncomfy."

And maybe also that she had some peculiar ways of categorizing things in her head.

"Oh."

That'd been the part Marc thought he'd been mistaken about - that Harley cared about not wanting to do things like that. So now Marc didn't know what to say or do. On the upside not talking was always an easy option.

For him, maybe!

Harley had to stuff the entire rest of the burrito into her mouth to make up for the fact that she somehow didn't know what to say to or do about that 'oh'.

It was slightly too much for a single bite, but nothing catastrophically unmanageable.

Well now Marc was distracted by watching her try to house the rest of that burrito. He may have looked a little amused while he did it.

And all of Harley's focus was suddenly zeroed in on it and not on any of his reactions, very recent past or present, so... Win-win?

It took a little bit of effort in chewing and then a little more in swallowing, but Harley managed all of that. Not gracefully, by any means, but she did it. With a kind of a gasp at the end, and then a , "Whew," as she reached back for where she was pretty sure there was coffee.

The hint of amusement was still there. Though it wasn't distracting Marc so much that he didn't put a hand on her side to help her balance as she reached for her drink.

"Oh for -- just get outta there," Harley muttered to her takeaway coffee when it refused to cooperate with her for a second. As ya do. But then it was followed up with a pleased sigh as she managed to get it. "Ya want yours, too?"

"Sure," Marc said. "There's no difference with those two. Didn't know what you wanted."

Considering the fight Harley'd endured to get the first one out, she was remarkably quick about switching it to her other hand and holding it out for him, while she fished the other one out, too.

"I can take it plain!"

Marc took it with his free hand, still using the other one to help her balance. In case she needed the help, or something. "Plain's easier."

He was just being so thoughtful, helping her with her balance. Clearly, when she straightened back up with the other coffee in hand and her free hand settled onto his arm, that was just for balance, too.

"It's all just caffeine right now."

Just like the way Marc spread his hand out to cover more of her side once she settled into place. Being helpful, was all.

"You're pretty spry for not being awake yet."

"I'm spry always," Harley replied, with that cheerfully smug tone she was so fond of, "haven't you noticed yet?"

"You do sleep sometimes," Marc said. "I've seen it."

"Yeah, but I'm spry if you wake me up," Harley retorted, after a good sip of coffee. "Still counts!"

"Nah, you're cute when you're sleeping," Marc told her. Then took a smug sip of his own coffee.

"Why are you looking so smug about something I am?" Harley questioned, immediately. "I'm cute, I should be smug!"

"I get to see it," Marc pointed out.

"Is it that great?"

Just wondering.
