Causeway Parking Lot to the Mainland; Later Tuesday Afternoon

It might not have ultimately been too much of a surprise which car in the parking lot was Harley's current ride. At least if you happened to know the Chevy Impala was Dean's provided it was even present on Tuesday. The funky 1970s green Chevy Chevelle sedan (four doors, see what she'd said about the back seat?) was of course Harley's: a classic look, but not so flashy as to attract too much attention and immediately get her in trouble as soon as she'd grabbed it from where the very unfortunate previous owner had left it.

Although the main hint that it was hers was still probably that she'd parked her butt on the hood of the thing as she waited for Marc to get there.

Call it a freebie.

Marc gave her a wry look
"What do you think?"

"I think," Harley replied, really drawing it out as if it was something that needed some actual thought, "you wanna just have me to yourself."

A prospect she had zero problem with.

Marc nodded, because she wasn't wrong. Though he said, "I mean if you're offering - "

"Which part?" Harley asked. "I gotta know which joke to make."

Harley might not have been able to make the joke yet, but she got another laugh out of Marc anyway. He was able to manage, "The not sharing thing or whatever you said."

You know what suddenly struck Harley, right in that moment?

How nice it was that his laugh didn't sound like something that should have been written out in big block letters, a HA HA HA to make your skin crawl.

His laugh? Was just a laugh. It shook his chest, made talking a bit of an issue for a moment, and wasn't meant to intimidate anyone in any way.

There was a joke Harley was supposed to be making, but she'd forgotten all about it. She just looked... taken with something.

There might be a note of surprise in Marc's laugh, as though he himself didn't expect it to happen. Because, well, he didn't. But no, none of that other stuff. Not his style.

Marc saw Harley's look and had a curious one of his own. "You okay?"

"Oh, I am just peachy," Harley replied, but no, she wasn't going to explain what that look had been about.

Instead, she leaned in and pressed a quick kiss on his cheek, no reason, then patted his shoulder and moved to finally - sigh - maneuver herself off his lap.

"Come on, big guy, you got dinner to buy!"

At least it had given more time so that Marc was physically able to - ahem - come on now?

"Yes, ma'am," Marc said. He let himself out on the passenger side. "With all the desserts."

She'd specified pies but it was Marc so frankly impressive he'd gotten the category right.

And would even Harley remember about stating such a big preference once it was actually time to do something about it? Remained to be seen!

But she locked his door behind him (she liked this car, she could be responsible sometimes!) and got out, herself.

"All the desserts," she agreed, with a happy sigh.

"Maybe some protein before we get there," Marc said, giving her a dry look which suggested he knew exactly what she might do with a setup like that.

In the meanwhile he came around to her side and automatically went to slip a hand around her waist. So much so he wasn't even fully aware he was doing it.

Well, his automatic and fully unexamined action saved Harley from actually going with hers (which would've been to offer him her hand), so hey!

"I was tryin' to!" she protested, like clockwork, leaning against his side.

"Later," Marc said, moving his hand to her hip since she was being so helpful by leaning in close that way. "If you're not too full."

For a guy not normally into word play he did seem to keep serving these things up for her on the regular.

Yeah, he just kept bringing this on himself.

Like so:

"Ha, nothing's gonna fill me up like you, promise."

"Might hold you to that," Marc told her. In the meanwhile he was holding the door to the diner so she could walk in.

"Can hold me any way you want."

Just maybe not right this second since she did need to get through this door now, which she did, happily swanning in.

Marc once again shook his head in bemusement as he followed her in. Once inside he looked around, trying to get a feel for the place.

The interior - either classic or stereotypical diner, depending on your point of view - had definitely seen better days, but the vibe was a little more 'why change what works?' than 'we've completely given up'. Wasn't packed on a random Tuesday, but there were enough people looking happy enough to be there.

It was also, of course, all deeply unpretentious.

Harley was immediately at home, to the point of breathing a happy sigh after her own curious look around. "What do you think?" she asked, glancing back at Marc. "Booth by the window or near the back?"

The place wasn't huge so it wasn't that much of a difference, but he might have a preference!

Marc was briefly distracted as he noticed some cheesecake in the dessert display, but it was more than easy for Harley to get his attention again.

"Something tells me we should opt for the back."

Past experience and all. Also like five seconds ago in the car.

What, couldn't they be counted on to behave in public?

Harley just gave an easy nod. "Something might be right, so the back it is!" she said, and went sauntering for the most private booth that was available, giving someone from the staff a cheerful wave as she went.

Marc would neither confirm nor deny purposefully going a pace behind her so he could enjoy the view. He did wait to see which side of the booth she wanted to sit on before taking his own.

"This is good," he told her, in case she'd been wondering if he was all right with the choice of place to eat.

"Good!" Harley beamed, settling into her side of the booth while someone from the staff (a woman well on her way to earning the moniker 'little old lady') dropped off some menus. "I've got an excellent eye for diners."

Even at top speed!

Marc flipped open his menu to check out the options. "Hard to beat places that are open late."

Not that they were here late, but as a concept diners often tended to be.

"They're gonna have you covered," Harley agreed. And the menu seemed to be speaking to that, too: there was a nice selection of all the classics on there. "Can't even count the times these places have saved my ass."

And not just because her memory didn't always retain stuff lile that, either.

"That and street food," Marc agreed. Which was something he and Watts had in common. "We doing apps?"
