Causeway Parking Lot to the Mainland; Later Tuesday Afternoon

It might not have ultimately been too much of a surprise which car in the parking lot was Harley's current ride. At least if you happened to know the Chevy Impala was Dean's provided it was even present on Tuesday. The funky 1970s green Chevy Chevelle sedan (four doors, see what she'd said about the back seat?) was of course Harley's: a classic look, but not so flashy as to attract too much attention and immediately get her in trouble as soon as she'd grabbed it from where the very unfortunate previous owner had left it.

Although the main hint that it was hers was still probably that she'd parked her butt on the hood of the thing as she waited for Marc to get there.

Call it a freebie.

"Can be a plan!" Harley replied. "I'm just saying, it... sounds nice."

Why would you make her explain this? She'd known it was a bad idea to start saying it in the first place! And now she just had to power through and sound upbeat and casual about it.

"I'm still not nice," Marc told her. But kidding. Making the topic much less serious because nothing was serious here, right?

"But next time sounds okay."

That part might be serious. Whoops.

"You don't have to be nice for shit you're involved in to still be nice," Harley retorted, grabbing that tangent with all her might. "Sometimes you're gonna have to accept collateral niceness."

That got something like a laugh out of Marc. "That'd be a shitty name for a band."

"But they would make moderate bucks in the college hipster colours circuit," Harley retorted, "and I'm still right."

"There you go, being smug again," Marc said.

Funny how that didn't sound like a complaint.

"If you think this is bad --" Which he didn't actually seem to, no! "-- you just wait until you're diving face-first into my crotch again, 'cause I'm gonna be real smug then."

"Smug's not the reaction I'll be going for there," Marc told her.

"Then what is?" Harley just had to ask. "Do tell! In grisly detail!"

Marc and detail did not generally mix well together, she knew this.

"Grisly isn't what I'm going for either," Marc told her.

Harley snorted. "You know you can just 'no comment' your way outta the dirty talk, right, you don't have to separately reject every word I use. It's rude."

Marc gave her a thoughtful look. Then the road ahead to make sure it was fairly clear. Then he shifted over to try to place a kiss behind her ear and whisper, "No comment."

Well then.

"No fair," Harley whined, although there was an undertone of a laugh in the sound, making it sound much less like a genuine complaint.

It was just the sudden butterflies, was all.

"Nobody said anything about playing fair," Marc pointed out. As long as he'd already moved, he stayed where he was. Other than putting an arm around her shoulders, that is. That bit of movement he added.

"I did, just now," Harley pointed out in turn, but it was particularly lacking in argumentative tone.

In fact, she just sounded pleased. Funny what having him get all close and cozy and hurtling down the road at an irresponsible speed could do for a girl.

"Then I'm telling you I'm not gonna," Marc replied. He settled in next to her since he might as well be comfortable. "Tough shit."

Harley snorted, loudly, but the particular curve of her lips said she just barely held back a laugh.

"Oh, tough shit, huh? Charming."

It was, actually.

"If I had a nickel for every time I've been called that..." Marc said, letting the sentence trail off.

He also started to use his fingers to draw light circles on the back of Harley's neck.

The shiver that ensued was both predictable and a delight.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Harley drawles, "you'd have a bunch of money and it would all be fake 'cause that's what sarcasm gets ya."

"It's fake when it's sarcasm?" Marc asked. "Well shit. Guess I didn't actually pay for dinner."

"I dunno," Harley retorted, "did ya use your 'charming' bucks?"

"I was supposed to pay attention when you're talking about dessert?" Marc replied.

"Well, you were supposed to pay attention to the important stuff," Harley replied, and would you look at that, the hand closest to him was momentarily free to pat his thigh, "which by the sound of it, ya did."

"I'm told I can be pretty focused with the right motivation," Marc said

The word was intense but six of one, half dozen of another.

"I've noticed!" She had some fond memories of it already, in fact. "And I would say I can be pretty good at providing motivation."

Which of course had nothing at all to do with the way her fingers oh so idly danced up his thigh.
