Barbie Dream House [Needful Things]; Saturday Morning

Barbie was having the best day ever because every day was the best day ever. At least when you were Barbie! Sure, maybe the surroundings of her house weren't looking quite like what she was used to, and she didn't remember having a dog before, but neither of those things were going to stop her from enjoying her usual routine!

A routine that was entirely visible from the street, since there were little in the way of walls on the street-facing side of the building. You know, how buildings usually worked!

So, Serendipity Place and Pie Lane, enjoy watching every girl's best friend do her makeup in front of a mirror with no actual mirror in it, and make breakfast that involves no actual liquid or anything genuinely edible.

Just don't be a creep about it!

Jonny was walking past and stopped to gawk. And wonder if there was anything in there worth stealing. Or shooting.

Shooting? Absolutely not! Stealing? Probably not unless weirdly oversized and over simplistic items in fetching shades of pink were something he knew a market for.

Barbie spotted him soon enough, and gave an enthusiastic wave. "Hi! ...Ken?"

He didn't look like any of the Kens she was used to, but what else would his name be?

Jonny could find markets for a lot of things! The question is if it was worth the hassle.

"Sure, why not?" Unless Ken also had warrants out for him, it was as good a name as any.

"You're very...bright."

Barbie was choosing to take that as a compliment, so: "Thank you! You're very --"

Actually, didn't he kind of look like whoever had been playing with him had got their hands on some markers?

"-- colorful! In the face!"

"That's me - colorful Ken," Jonny answered. "You know your building's missing walls?"

Barbie took a quizzical little look around, but no, it was only missing the usual number of walls.

"Well, of course it is," she replied, on a friendly chuckle. "It's a Dream House! Easier for play!"

"Play?" Jonny raised an eyebrow at that. "Yeah, okay, no kinkshaming here. Didn't realize it was that kind of place."

Barbie squinted at him.

"I don't know what those words mean," she said, "but I'm getting an undertone that leads me to believe this is not that kind of house!"

Jonny shrugged. "If you say so. What kind of house is it?"

"A Dream House?" Barbie said, again, sounding like that should have meant something to him. "It's... Well, it's my home. It's a Barbie Dream House!"

Literally the best she could do in terms of an explanation.

"So, drugs?" Jonny asked. "Or you just like sleeping?"

"'Dream' like... aspirational," Barbie clarified. "Dream House. House of your dreams, house you dream of living in?"

"Oh, right!" Jonny nodded. "You dream of living in a house without walls?"

Considering what earlier in the day had been like, suffice it to say Marc had motivation to check in on the neighbors. So Saturday afternoon Marc swung by to Needful Things and...

He was just gonna stare.

There was just so much to stare at! And most of it was so pink! Including what Barbie was wearing - which she had definitely not changed into the normal way by non-Barbieland standards.

She was just hanging out in her kitchen - not that that mattered with the complete lack of walls in her building. But at least that part helped her see Marc? And so he was getting a very cheerful wave with a big smile.

"Hi Ken!"

Marc pretty much knew what answer he was going to get, given who the woman kind of resembled, but he was going to ask anyway.

"Where's Harley?"

Was the answer he was expecting this one?

"Who?"

That had, in fact, been more or less what Marc expected. Which meant as far as he was concerned he was done here since this wasn't Harley which meant he did not care.

Except before he could leave a thought came to him. A thought that, unfortunately, did not have a name attached to it which meant, damn it, Marc had thought of it himself.

He sighed and asked, "Where's Bruce? The hyena?"

Barbie blinked. "What? The... hyena?"

At least she sounded like she knew what the word meant? Wasn't that something?

She just also happened to be shaking her head.

"I'm sorry, I think you'll want Safari Barbie for that," she said, apologetically. "I don't know anything about any hyenas."

"The dog?" Marc tried. Just in case the problem was she didn't recognize a hyena when she saw one.

It was a shame Marc hadn't spent any time cultivating a relationship where Bruce would come if he called. Probably come in handy right now if Bruce was around.

"The dog?" Barbie questioned - and then remembered. "Oh, the dog! He's around here somewhere!"

As if on cue, Tanner the dog came trotting jauntily out from somewhere behind the house.

He did not look a single bit like Bruce.

Marc stared. Because of course the hyena would be affected too. Harley's place was, why not Bruce?

"Cool," Marc said. "You'll make sure he gets fed?"

Marc didn't care, but Harley would.

Don't ask why that made it acceptable for him to care. Because yes that implied something that Harley cared about Marc cared about by proxy. Shut up, that was why.

"I found dog food in here!" Barbie told him helpfully, picking up the box in question to brandish it in the general direction of the street level, while Tanner came over to try and sniff at Marc. The box... did not look like there would be anything edible in it? Or possibly anything at all? "It's weird, I don't usually have a dog, that sort of feels like the job for some kind of... dog-haver Barbie? But it's helpful that there's food!"

"Kay well there should be instructions on the box," Marc said. Not that he was trying to be a dick about it, she just didn't seem used to the whole dog thing. There was instructions on the cat's food, dogs had to be the same, right? "So feed him. Make sure he gets water. Take him for walks."

"I know how dogs work!" Barbie objected, mildly offended.

Despite acting like she might not, so his whole deal was reasonable.
