Apartment Above Needful Things; Monday Afternoon

Soooooo... Harley no longer had a headache? And okay, maybe talking to Atton the day before had helped, a little, something. But come Monday, she was still in something of a blanket goblin mode, huddled in her apartment with comfort snacks and Bruce and bad reality TV reruns.

She'd pick herself up by her bootstraps tomorrow, okay? It was coming, cross her heart! Soon!

Just... maybe not yet.

So far, for Monday, having made it to the couch instead of the bed seemed like enough progress.

Marc took all that in for the first time. "Had a real shit time of it, huh?"

It really did look like someone had been very sad all over the bed for a while, didn't it?

"Kinda, yeah," Harley replied with an awkward shrug, as she sent some more stuff falling onto the floor. She'd clean all that up... later. At an unnamed later time in the future. "Real shit."

He wasn't going to be reading anything into how he was being allowed to see this, was he?

Marc? Read into things? Seemed so unlikely.

He did silently offer an arm out if she wanted a hug though. No reason.

Harley looked at it like she didn't know what to do with it.

"What's that for?"

Marc dropped his hand back down. "I guess nothing."

There was a faint sense of disappointment that went through Harley and that also showed very briefly on her face, in response. Which was kind of funny, considering what she'd actually pushed him in here with plans to do.

She shook it off, then pointed at his feet. "Shoes, come on."

Marc jerked his thumb towards the bed. "Can I sit?"

"That is where you're goin' if I have my way," Harley told him, "so yeah."

Marc gave something of a wry look in response. He sat down and started taking his shoes off.

Off his look, Harley shrugged and pointed out, "Hey, I said if."

"I'm not assuming anything," he assured her.

"Neither am I," Harley replied, "that's what I'm saying."

Even if so far, this portion of the day seemed to be going her way.

"Makes two of us," Marc said.

He finished taking off his shoes and socks, then looked up at her. Curious, he asked, "Now what?"

Harley gestured for him to scoot back on the bed. It was debris free! Probably. There might have been stuff hiding somewhere in the fold of a blanket, biding its time.

"Now you lay down."

Marc scooted back, looking to see if there were some pillows he could prop his head up on.

There were several, what with Harley being kind of a maximalist in all things, bedding included.

While he was doing that, Harley herself got one knee on the bed, then the other.

Marc arranged the pillows so he could be not exactly sitting up but not fully flat on his back either. Just enough that he could more easily watch what Harley was doing. Which was what he was doing now.

And what Harley was doing... was crawling along the bed, until she could curl up against his side in a way that also allowed her to rest her head against his chest.

Yeah.

Marc put an arm around her. Without thinking about it he said, "I gotcha."

"I know," Harley murmured, rubbing faint circles into his side with her fingertips.

"Sorry you're having a shit time," Marc said.

Present tense very much on purpose.

It was... accurate.

But Harley didn't want to say that. Or much of anything in direct response. So she made a little noise, which in itself kind of sounded like she was trying to downplay and minimize the whole thing.

Probably a little too late to do that and have him buy it, though.

Marc rubbed her back where his hand could reach, letting her make whatever noise she wanted.

Harley was quiet for a moment, just breathing. His chest rising and falling under her head, too.

But... She was Harley, so. It didn't last. As she spoke, she sounded glum, and her voice was quiet. "D'ya really think it was that pathetically obvious I was gonna try an' sleep with her?"

"I didn't think it was pathetic," Marc replied. "You're figuring shit out. You're still getting over an ex who did a hell of a number on you. Somebody shows up looking like another ex? You're gonna try to get a handle on that shit. Makes sense."
